How Solar System Sizing Works in Nigeria

Sizing a solar power system in Nigeria requires careful balance between your instantaneous peak wattage (which determines your Inverter size), your daily energy consumption in Watt-hours (which dictates your Battery storage), and your sunlight recharge capacity (which dictates your Solar PV panel array).

1. Inverter Sizing (kVA)

Inverters convert DC battery power into 220V AC household electricity. We factor in a 25% safety surge headroom so inductive motor starts (like refrigerators and AC compressors) do not trip the inverter into overload.

2. Battery Bank (kWh vs Ah)

Lithium LiFePO4 batteries allow an 80% to 90% Depth of Discharge (DoD) with 6,000 cycles (10-15 years). Traditional Tubular Lead-Acid batteries only permit 50% DoD and last 2 to 3 years under heavy daily grid blackouts.

3. Solar PV Panels (Watts)

South-West Nigeria (Ibadan, Lagos, Ogun) receives an average of 5.0 to 5.4 peak sun hours daily, while Abuja and the North reach 5.8 to 6.2 hours. An undersized panel array will fail to fully recharge your batteries before dusk.

Next Steps After Calculating Your Load

  1. Audit your appliances: Replace old incandescent bulbs with 7W-9W LEDs and ensure your air conditioner uses DC inverter compressor technology.
  2. Get a physical site audit: Have a certified installer inspect your roof angle, shadow obstructions, and distribution board (DB) wiring.
  3. Request quotes: Connect with vetted installers through our network to compare hardware warranties and labor fees.
